Hawks Kick Off the Fall Sports and Activities Journalist: Kennedy McCullough & Brooke Lubke Hawk students, staff, family, and friends started the athletic and activity seasons with some fun with the first 2022 pep rally of the year last Sunday. The evening kicked off by introducing the cheer squad for the 2022-2023 season. This includes Freshman: Sophia Schulze. Sophomores: CoralAnn Van Landingham, Raegan Hansen, and Skyler Scheidemann. Juniors: Kylee Young and Shae Kingery. Seniors: Cameron St. John, Emma Young, Brooke Lubke, and Co-Captains Kennedy McCullough and Shayna Klute. The cheerleaders are sponsored by Jan Ediger and Liz Friesen. We also heard from Coach Kayla Gaughen and the volleyball team. This is Kayla’s first season as head coach for the Hawks. The girls started off the year focusing on both skill set and mindset. They work together as a team to build on that daily. This year they have chosen the theme “Practice. Play. Persevere.” Their first game of the season will be at the Axtell tournament on Saturday, August 27th. Returning letter winners are Lillian Dose, Shayna Klute, Brooke Lubke, Shae Kingery, and Nevaeh Lukassen. From the volleyball court to the football field, we then heard from Coach Jereme Jones and the football team. This is Coach Jones’ first year as head coach at Hampton, and he hopes to continue building on the successes of last season. He thanked Coach Klute for trusting him with the team. Jones gives him the credit for building a strong foundation these past few years. The team starts off their season on Friday traveling to Sterling where they will play the Lewiston Tigers at 7 pm. This year they only have one Senior - Edward VanLandingham. Returning letter winners are Eli Arndt, Brayden Dose, Evan Pankoke, Bryce Joseph, Jack Bullis, and Kash Majerus. Transitioning from athletics to activities, Mr. Miller and the Ag Leadership Class spoke about the Hawk Herd. The students shared the history of the Hawk Herd all while asking those in attendance for generous donations to aid the expansion for future years. Shayna Klute provided tours of the current facilities and informed the community about the expansion that is currently taking place. With speeches wrapped, the cheerleaders led students through three games during the pep rally: a balloon collecting game, tug or war, and musical chairs. During the balloon collecting game, three students from each class ran across the field to collect one balloon each time. In the end, points were calculated with some balloons taking away points. The sophomores won this game with a total of 20 points! Tug of war was the next game. The volleyball team vs. the football team competed, and the football team won. Then the Freshman vs the Seniors, where the Seniors won; the Sophomores vs. the Juniors where the Sophomores won; and finally the Sophomores vs. the Seniors, where the Seniors took the final win. Our last game was musical chairs with the girls vs the boys. In this game, Maci Bullis and Wyatt Dose won. Winner/s of games received candy. Best of luck to all of the fall athletic and activity events!
