Tammy Wolinski - School Improvement, MTSS, and Title

Sometime after birth, I developed a love of reading. I honestly don’t know how old I was, but I know it was early. Books were magical and once I started reading one I just couldn’t stop. They are still this way for me.

Reading is not magical for everyone. Sometimes it takes years of hard work to develop the skills needed to be a reader and sometimes the perfect book just hasn’t been found yet. Being able to read is a vital part of growing up. There are many reasons to read with your child starting at birth and continuing as your child grows. Children also need to see their parents reading as they will mimic what you are doing.

Here are some compelling reasons to pick up a book and begin reading with your child:

  • supports language development

  • creates a good understanding of the world around us

  • increases thinking skills

  • lengthens concentration time

  • builds stamina for focusing on tasks

  • increases imagination and creative thinking

  • supports cognitive development

In honor of National Read Across America Day, March 2, 2023, I leave you with this quote. “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” ~Dr. Seuss
